Bologna has been described as 'the city of porticos'. There are 37km of arcades in the historical city centre offering shelter from the rain, snow, sun and general bustle of the lively old town. The city is adorned with over twenty defensive medieval towers, surviving from the 13th Century, and the oldest university in the western world. The trade fair site is the second largest in Italy and regularly hosts major global trade events.
